What is the onboard smoking policy?
Table Of Content

Smoking cigarettes, cigars, or pipes is allowed at clearly-marked outdoor smoking areas and on guest cabin balconies. Most cruise lines allow cigar or pipe smoking, but often only in outdoor smoking areas or special cigar lounges. Other than that, however, smoking is not permitted in any other indoor area, aside from designated cigar lounges. There are clearly indicated external smoking areas throughout their ships.

Why Can’t You Smoke in a Cruise Cabin?
All Carnival ships have at least one designated outdoor smoking area, allowing cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. Royal Caribbean’s ships are technically designated as non-smoking. You cannot smoke on the pool deck, outside decks, pool bar, cabin balconies, or any public area. The only area aboard Silversea cruise ships where smoking is permitted indoors is Connoisseurs Corner.
MSC Cruises
It’s important to note that on embarkation and debarkation day, smoking is not allowed outdoors on any of Carnival’s cruise ships due to refueling. To find the smoking policy of a specific Carnival cruise, check out their website. All cruise ships allow smoking onboard to some capacity, although this capacity is in designated areas.
Silversea Cruises
Except in Churchill’s Cigar Lounge, where smoking cigars and pipes is allowed, Cunard Line’s smoking policy forbids smoking indoors. Smoking is allowed in all casinos (apart from special nonsmoking days), except Zuiderdam, Oosterdam, Westerdam and Eurodam, which have entirely smoke-free casinos. Cigars are allowed on cruises, but you can only smoke them in the designated smoking areas. Depending on which cruise ship you are on, some have specific areas where cigars are prohibited, but others have areas where only cigars are allowed, as is the case with NCL.

With very few exceptions, smoking isn’t allowed on cruise ship balconies anymore. Although some cruisers try to sneak a smoke in the open air, it can be a safety hazard (and annoyed guests on nearby balconies will likely turn you in). Cruise ships treat cigarettes, cigars, and e-cigarettes the same, so don’t try to bypass the rules with your electronic cigarette, or you may be subject to a fine. Even if it’s legal in your departing destination, cruise ships make stops in many other destinations along the way and must follow the laws of each. This would make regulating marijuana use on the cruise challenging to regulate and coordinate.
Each Paul Gauguin cruise ship has multiple outdoor areas where smoking is permitted. These include the forward outdoor areas on Deck 5 (starboard and port sides), La Palette (outside area, starboard side only), and Bar Du Soleil (starboard side only). Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy, and Norwegian Encore each have a designated smoking room within the casino. On all other ships, players may smoke cigarettes or e-cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. E-cigarettes can be used inside guest cabins and on cabin balconies, as well as at any designated smoking area.
Smoking is permitted in designated exterior open deck areas of all ships. Cigar and pipe smoking is only permitted in designated outdoor areas on open decks. This also means that you cannot bring marijuana onboard the ship or use it in any way. This rule applies to marijuana in all forms, including edibles. The exceptions to this general rule are Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Splendor, where smoking is not permitted indoors at all, including the casinos.
